Shen-Ming Chen(陳生明) received his PhD degrees in chemistry from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. He was a visiting postdoctoral fellow with the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry ( Prof. Rudi van Eldik group), Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany in 1997. He joined Department of Chemical Engineering, National Taipei Institute of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan in 1985. He had been an associate professor of Department of Chemical Engineering, National Taipei Institute of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan from 1991 to 1997. Since August 1997, he has been a full professor of Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, National Taipei University of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan. He has been the Dean(Curator) of library, National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan from 2000 to 2006 and the Director of Extracurricular Activity, office of student affairs, National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan from 1995 to 2000. His research interest includes bioelectrochemistry, chemical sensors, biosensors, electrocatalysis and electroanalysis, photoelectrochemistry, metalloproteins, metalloporphyrins, nanotechnology, spectroscopic techniques, scanning probe techniques, quartz crystal microbalance, materials research, fuel cells, solar cell and photovoltaic cells.

Michael Faraday
Ever since the chemists John Frederic Daniell and Michael Faraday founded electrochemistry as known today, a great deal of research has been conducted in this field during the second half of the 20th century. Briefly, it is a typical branch of chemistry with numerous sub branches that studies the reactions which take place at the interface of an electronic conductor (electrode) and an ionic conductor (electrolyte).

Dr. Leland C. Clark
The concept of biosensing started when Leland C. Clark demonstrated the measurement of glucose concentration in solutions using Clark oxygen electrode. He is considered to be the father of biosensor technology. Since then, a great deal of development had taken place in biosensing technology. Among them the approach of electrochemical studies with modified electrodes showed interesting applications.
Chemically modified electrodes (CMEs) have evolved as a recently emerging field and much study of interest have been shown by many researchers in this field. In detail, the chemically modified electrodes comprise an approach to electrode system design that finds the use in a wide spectrum of basic electrochemical investigations, including the relationship of heterogeneous electron transfer and chemical reactivity of electrode surface chemistry, electrostatic phenomena at electrode surface, and electron as well as ionic transport phenomena in polymers, and the design of electrochemical devices and systems for applications in chemical sensing, energy conversion and storage, molecular electronics, electrochromic displays and electro-organic synthesis.
There are different types of modifying materials investigated viz. mediators or the catalysts, such as carbon nanoparticles, polymers, metal nano particles, metal oxides, dyes, heavy molecular weight biomolecules, enzymes etc. We are interested in studying the mechanisms of these reactions with the aim of defining the role of the mediators and catalysts, including the nature of the substrate binding.
Typical examples of research work done in our lab on the modification of electrodes for biosensing applications are given below:Ø The functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs), gold nanoparticles (Au) with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) as catalysts for the simultaneous determination of tyrosine, guanine, adenine and thymine.
Ø Application of f-MWCNTs, metal nanoparticles and polymer modified electrodes for the simultaneous determination of neurotransmitters with ascorbic acid.
Ø Sensors made of metal oxides and copolymers for the detection of NADH, hydrogen peroxide and oxygen.

The film formations and the electrochemical characterization can be done using the various CHI CV instruments available in our lab; these include RDE, RRDE, EQCM, EIS, SECM, etc. SECM is used for the electrochemical active sites imaging of modified electrodes. Physical characterization of these electro-catalysts in our recently completed projects was generally done by AFM,SEM and XFS instruments in our department.

PtAu Hybrid Film
The fabrication of mono and bi-metallic nanoparticles (Pt, Au, Ag and Pd) by chemical and electrochemical synthesis methods are interesting investigations in the field of nano science. Mono metallic and bi-metallic nanoparticles have their wide range of electrocatalytic activities which can be applied as electrochemical sensors and biosensors. We have developed a PtAu hybrid film modified electrochemical biosensors using L-cysteine as binder. The developed PtAu bi-metallic nanoparticles modified sensors could be applied for the individual and simultaneous detection of dopamine, ascorbic acid and uric acid also the selective detection of epinephrine, norepinephrine, respectively. This PtAu bi-metallic hybrid film could be produced on gold, indium ion oxide electrodes for different kind of studies such as electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and direct electrochemical studies.

Synthesis of nanoparticles and bi-metallic nano triangles using eco-friendly green electrolytes (room temperature ionic liquids)
Room temperature ionic liquids play a major role as green electrolytes. Instead of hazardous acids and bases as electrolytes, using room temperature ionic liquids, we have fabricated metal nanoparticles (Au, Ag) and bi-metallic nano triangles (AuAg nano triangles). Further the fabricated nanoparticles and nano triangles using ionic liquids as green electrolytes could be applied for various electrochemical and biosensing applications.

Dye polymers - multiwalled carbon nanotubes composites


Intrinsically Conducting Polymers
Conducting polymers are known for their excellent conductivity, light weight and biocompatibility. Composites of intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) are materials that utilize conjugated polymers and at least one secondary component that can be inorganic or organic materials or biologically active species. Based on above facts we are exploring and preparing the polypyrrole and PEDOT composite electrode and the prepared electrode charaterized by the surface morphology.
We have also synthesized Poly[3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-co-(5-amino-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid)] [PEDOT-PANS] electrochemically. PEDOT-PANS film modified electrode showed electrocatalytic activity towards oxidation of dopamine (DA) in acetate buffer solution (pH 5.0) and results in a marked enhancement of the current response. The linear sweep voltammetric (LSV) peak heights are linear with DA concentration from 2×10-6 to 1×10-5 M. The detection limit is 5×10-7 M. 4-Phenyl azo aniline (4-PAA)/PEDOT modified electrode was prepared by cyclic voltammetry.4-PAA/PEDOT electrode showed an excellent electro catalytic activity towards the oxidation of NADH and showed a stable Flow injection analysis (FIA) response with a detection limit of 50 nM.

Metal hexacyanoferrates are an important class of insoluble mixed-valence polynuclear compounds extensively used to prepare chemically modified electrodes (CMEs). Polynuclear mixed-valent metal hexacyanoferrate (MHCF) hybrid films are prepared on glassy carbon electrode by multiple scan cyclic voltammetry and the deposition was monitored by using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The electrocatalytic properties of modified electrodes are studied toward biologically important compounds such as neurotransmitters, ascorbic acid, L-cysteine, hydrazine, hydroxylamine, sulfur oxianions, and iodite by using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disc electrode (RDE) techniques. The surface morphological studies of CMEs were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
